A few years back I was mixing my band late at night. My family was already in bed. My twins at the time were about a year old. I was in a rush of finishing the mix for the lounch of a new CD and really had to deliver fast. So I worked from home in the next room to our bedroom.
The very first night working on a kick and bass I woke my kids up at least 5 times. You can imagine my wife being super happy about me having a band. To calm the waters I stoped and continued the next night with headphones. Soon realised that it's impossible to mix kick and bass on any headphones. Just the lack of low rumble and the missing feeling of sub bass in my chest made it a big struggle!
The next day I went to my day job and ended up not working at all. I was researching the whole day for a quiet alternative that could support mixing low frequencies just like with standard audio monitors. I didn't find any ready to go solutions. What I did find was a tactile sound technology that enables you to actually listen with your body. So no sound in the room, no disturbance, etc. That made me wonder if I could make some device at home that would act like tactile generator. You can imagine what I was doing the next weekend.
I took a used speaker, pulled off the membrane and mounted the coil directly to my chair. Boom! I will never forget the feeling and the smile when I first experienced body sound. In a split second I knew I have to make a better version. So it began. The OLLO Audio idea was born that night and the very first mix was made completly quiet to my family and with full rumble of low frequencies in my body.
I made a very first prototype for mixing on headphones just as if I were in a studio. Now we are developing the products that goes beyond simple stereo mixing. We are researching 3D mixing using ambisonics and getting ready to support stereo, surround and VR!
